Starting in 2014 as a result of the Affordable Care Act, every health insurance plan sold in the insurance marketplace must offer 10 essential health benefits. Among these essential benefits is “Pediatric Services,” including dental care and vision care for kids.
Most health plans must cover a set of preventive health services for children at no cost when delivered by an in-network provider. For example, all children are eligible for a complimentary (no copay) annual eye health examination (including vision screening) under the list of preventative health services coverage. All new marketplace health plans and must cover this list of preventive services for children without charging you a copayment or coinsurance. This is true even if you haven’t met your yearly deductible.
Additionally, if your child(ren) need(s) health coverage, he/she may be eligible for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). If they qualify, you are not required to buy a Marketplace plan to cover them. For more information on the CHIP, please click here.
According to the American Optometric Association, children should be examined by an eye doctor just before they enter kindergarten or first grade (ages 5-6) and every two years thereafter for regular check-ups. Remember, a comprehensive vision assessment at an early age can be vital in terms of how well your child performs in school. A child who is unable to see print or view a blackboard will become easily frustrated, inevitably leading to poor performance in his or her school work.
